Our Philosophy
Family-related issues often touch the very heart of our lives. We understand that every family is unique and will face different challenges. When families feud, nobody wins. Often, the best outcomes for your family are not reached by engaging in vigorously contested proceedings. Unnecessary acrimony between the parties would likely only escalate legal costs and drag the proceedings further, extracting a great emotional toll on everyone. Thus, whenever possible, we encourage mediation and seek to facilitate an amicable settlement between parties.
At Beacon, we strive to assist you with your practical needs and at the same time, care for your emotional needs by taking the time to understand your family and your concerns before advising on the best course of action.
Your child’s welfare is of paramount concern to us; be it in a family dispute or in your family’s estate planning. Children often become pawns in family battles. At Beacon, we try as far as possible to conduct the proceedings in a manner that minimises the impact it will have on your children. We also guide you in making decisions to better protect your child’s interests and plan for his or her future.
Divorce, Custody & Maintenance
“New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.” (Lao Tzu)
It can be one of the most traumatic and stressful times of your life when a marriage ends. Yet it is in those vulnerable moments that you would need to make important decisions that may drastically impact on your children's and your future. With extensive experience in handling both contentious and non-contentious divorce and ancillary proceedings, we can guide you through the divorce and ancillary matters process. At Beacon, we will not only advise you on the law but strive to provide you with good counsel in making practical decisions for matters such as the division of matrimonial assets, maintenance and custody, care and control for your child, to assist you in moving on with your life in the best possible way.
Personal Protection Orders
"I am living in hell from one day to the next. But there is nothing I can do to escape. I don't know where I would go if I did. I feel utterly powerless, and that feeling is my prison. I entered of my own free will, I locked the door, and I threw away the key." (Haruki Murakami)
Does the above describe how you feel? Unfortunately, family violence can happen to anyone and it may not be limited to just physical abuse. Many spouses (both male and female) also face emotional abuse or intimidation. While we can assist in applying for a Personal Protection Order against a violent spouse, we recognise that it may not be a long-term solution for every situation involving family violence. Very often, a Personal Protection Order treats the "symptoms" but not the cause of family violence and in some situations may even push a marriage to the point of an irretrievable breakdown. There are also times when the support of social workers and non-government organisations (NGOs) can really help, whether by counselling the violent spouse or by empowering the abused spouse. At Beacon, we work with all the various stakeholders, striving for the best outcome for the affected families.
Probate & Letters of Administration
What happens when your loved one passes on but leaves behind their property and other assets?
We can assist you in the management and distribution of his or her estate by applying for either:-
a. A Grant of Probate if the deceased leaves behind a will and has appointed an executor or executrix for his or her estate; or
b. A Grant of Letters of Administration if the deceased does not have a will, in order for a person to be appointed as an administrator of the estate.
Unfortunately, some of these proceedings may turn contentious when there is unhappiness within the family and disagreements arise. Our extensive litigation experience at Beacon comes in handy and we are able to represent you in contentious probate proceedings as well.
